Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles included two episodes as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. However, her parents did not allow her to act until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the negative effects that stress could be able to have on their daughter. Perry was a shy teenager and didn't act. She began acting at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was moved to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to land minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness led her back to California to return, where she started performing in the stage. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her on Broadway in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was performed in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she played a recurring role on The ABC drama about politics Scandal starring her father. The same year the actress was selected to play a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen model of the mother's role. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character she got the role via an audition.
